Under the Murano's hood is a 245 horsepower version of the Altima's lusty 3.5-liter V-6. The block and heads are aluminum. Compression ratio is a relatively high 10.3:1. Dual exhausts are standard. It's quiet and smooth at low speeds yet eager to rev under hard acceleration, and it's coupled to Nissan's continuously variable (CVT) transmission. The CVT's advantages—smoother, virtually shockless shifting, and better fuel economy than a conventional automatic, (Nissan claims up to 10 percent better mileage)—are slightly offset by 'drone-y' forward progress where the transmission's action seems to lag perceptively behind throttle inputs. To its credit, under acceleration, there's steady forward movement; but, when you're cruising and want to accelerate, there's a momentary pause as the CVT answers the call and the Murano surges ahead.
